Car remote control battery: Why is it not as durable as the original factory one?

The car remote key contains a battery. When the battery runs out, the remote key will not work, and you will not be able to lock the car remotely. At this point, the battery must be replaced in a timely manner.

However, many car owners may have had the experience that the batteries bought later are sometimes not as durable as the original car battery. The original battery generally lasts 3-5 years, but the batteries you buy rarely last that long.

I remember a few years ago my brother's car key ran out of battery. Since the electronics market was only a short distance away, I went to buy a Sony button battery. At that time, I was afraid of buying a counterfeit, so I chose the more expensive one. A battery cost 10 yuan. Unexpectedly, this battery failed after three months. Later, when my brother went to the 4S shop for maintenance, he brought a replacement battery and was charged 60 yuan.

Why are the batteries I bought later not durable? I think the biggest reason is that I bought counterfeit products!

Button batteries are not expensive, and counterfeit batteries are at best not durable, which does not cause too much harm to consumers' rights. In addition, the sales volume is not large, so even if people pay attention to their authenticity, they will not be overly concerned. Most people are just considering whether it is genuine or not. After all, it is not a lot of money. Just buy it and try it out; if you are lucky, it works. Such trivial matters are naturally not enough to attract the attention of law enforcement, so the prevalence of counterfeits is understandable.

In addition, some of the batteries purchased may be expired batteries that have been stored for a long time. Although they are not fake, they are expired or close to expiration. Batteries will self-discharge when not in use, and their quality cannot be guaranteed.

So when you find that the battery you bought is not durable, you may have bought counterfeit or expired products.

So why are the manufacturer's original batteries durable? It must be the quality of genuine products. Moreover, the original batteries from manufacturers are usually 'fresh'. Because manufacturers have a large demand for batteries, they certainly have quality requirements. Even if they do not purchase directly from battery manufacturers, they at least buy from large distributors, which can at least ensure that they are genuine products. Secondly, manufacturers purchase according to their plans, installing as many batteries as they produce cars. Therefore, there is a long time from the production of the battery to its installation in the key. The battery is 'fresh', so it is more durable.

How to determine the authenticity of a battery

The picture above is the battery I bought before, and I think it is genuine. Generally, the production date on the packaging of genuine products is stamped, with obvious marks. The positive terminal of a genuine battery is smooth, and the negative terminal has small numerical stamps. In addition, the battery voltage is also different. A battery with a rated voltage of 3V typically measures within 3.2 volts, while counterfeit products usually have a higher voltage, possibly reaching 3.3 volts.

Changing the battery in a car key is actually very simple. As long as your car key has a battery, you must open the key. After opening, there is usually a complete circuit board inside, with not many small parts. Just find the battery and replace it directly.

Car remote batteries generally start with CR, followed by four digits, representing the size of the battery. After we open the remote and find the battery, we can see its model on the positive terminal. Just buy according to the model. Of course, there are special cases. For example, my other car key ran out of battery, and I used a CR2032 battery, but I only had a CR2020 battery on hand. The diameter is the same, but it is thinner, so I bent the contact metal piece in the battery holder of the key outwards to hold it in place, and it worked normally.

In addition, sometimes after installing a new battery, the car key may not work. Excluding battery wear, the most likely reason is that the battery voltage is too high, causing the key to automatically protect itself. This usually only happens when purchasing counterfeit batteries.

Some small knowledge about car remote keys and batteries

  1. A dead remote does not affect driving, but you cannot remotely unlock or lock the car.

  2. When the remote is dead, you can still use the mechanical key to open the door. There is a mechanical keyhole on the driver's door. If you can't find it, it is definitely hidden under the door handle, covered with a plastic cover, mainly for aesthetics.

  3. A dead car key does not affect the electronic anti-theft function of the engine. The electronic anti-theft coil of the engine is located at the lock hole, and it communicates with the anti-theft chip via radio. The anti-theft chip does not need power, so as long as the anti-theft chip is present, regardless of the battery status, your engine's electronic anti-theft function will not be affected.

  4. A one-button start car does not have a mechanical ignition switch. When the car key is dead, the coil inside the car cannot sense the key, and pressing the start button will have no response. At this time, there is no need to worry; just bring the smart key close to the start button, and the vehicle can be started normally. Some cars may require placing the smart key in other designated locations, depending on how the manufacturer has set it up, with specific details in the user manual.

  5. Generally, when buying a car, there are two keys. In some families, both car keys can be used, such as one for each spouse. In some families, only one person drives and keeps one key. At this time, it is best to remove the battery for storage to avoid leakage and damage to the circuit board when the battery runs out.
